Hurricane Preparation
On average about five hurricanes strike the United States every three years. Texas is a state that is at high risk for tropical storms so it is important to be prepared. Here are some thinks to consider for your plan.
Flee or shelter in place?
This is an important decision that effects the preparations to make. If you are in an area that floods frequently, a costal or low-lying area, or in a manufactured home, emergency managers will probably suggest that you evacuate. For others it may be best to shelter in place. Evaluate your risk ahead of time so you will have a plan. It is best to have a written plan and share the plan with friends and family.
If your plan is to evacuate here are some suggestions:
Have a pre-planned place to go, friend or families place or emergency shelter. If you will stay at a hotel or motel, make reservations as early as possible. Have a plan for what to do with pets.
Know what route you would take to get there including a map if necessary.
Leave early to avoid traffic congestion.
Fill up your car with gas before you leave.
Have some emergency supplies ready in advance and take them with you.
Emergency Supplies
Your supply needs could vary but here are some ideas:
Water, one gallon per person each day for at least three days. You may want to have a mix of some gallon bottles and some drinking bottles. Water has a long shelf life so why not set aside a few 24 packs?
Food, at least a three-day supply of items that won?t spoil. Don?t forget a non-electric can opener.
A first aid kit, plus prescription medications.
Fire extinguisher.
Toilet paper, paper towels, garbage bags, paper cups and plates, plastic silverware, matches chlorine bleach, soap, other hygiene items, laundry detergent, and pet food and supplies if applicable. Get these supplies in advance because stores may be closed or sold out in time of disaster.
A battery powered radio, flashlights, and extra batteries.
Extra cash and change on hand.
Cell phone with extra charged battery.
If you are leaving your home don?t forget some extra clothes and a couple blankets.
Important documents in a waterproof container.
Books, toys, games or activities for kids.
If you plan on sheltering at your home a portable generator is a big plus. Don?t forget an extension cord set designed for generators, a few 5 gallon full gas cans, and fuel stabilizer. (Caution: Gasoline and generators are dangerous, read instructions and be cautious!)
Be sure to have good insurance coverage.
This can include homeowners, windstorm, flood, auto, life, and health insurance. Please consult with one of our agents about your needs.
